Media & Public Relations Officer

The Media and Public Relations Officer is a dynamic role that encompasses a diverse array of interactions with the media, community, and staff.  This position is responsible for building and sustaining a positive image for Cloncurry Shire Council and will be the main point of contact for Council’s media and communications.This role sits within the Executive Department. The department works in partnership with Council divisions and external stakeholders to drive strategic coordination, advocacy, communication, and other services that enhance Council’s corporate image and deliver positive economic and community outcomes which support Council’s strategic goals.This role will be responsible for the promotion of Council and its services both internally and externally through the effective use of traditional and digital media. The role provides support to the Mayor, Councillors, Executive Leadership Team, Managers, and other relevant stakeholders in relation to their media portfolios, including but not limited to coordinating media engagements, preparing proactive media material, preparing key messages, and talking points, responding to media enquiries, and preparing speeches.GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITESThe Media and Public Relations Officer is a key member of our team, integral to the successful management of proactive, reactive and issues management of the Council.This position will drive the delivery of strategic media liaison and public relations outcomes, delivering quality media and communication plans, and plan and develop opportunities and content to effectively promote Cloncurry Shire Council, the Mayor and Councillors.In addition, the position will be responsible for the following:Identify and manage potential media and communication issues and reputational risks by developing suitable strategies.Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with local, regional, and metropolitan media, and other key stakeholders.Review, edit and value-add to corporate documents to ensure a consistent standard across brand, tone, and language.Monitor media coverage and provide relevant reporting to manage crisis situations, measure effectiveness of campaigns and inform content.Submit required reports and attend meetings maintaining confidentiality at all times.Given the nature of this role, the appointed officer will need to be willing and available to work outside normal working hours, including weekends and public holidays as required.QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND LICENCES REQUIREDMandatory:Current Police ClearanceCurrent unrestricted class driver’s licenceWorking with Children (Blue Card)Previous Experience working in similar positionDesirable:Tertiary qualifications in media and/or communications is desirable.Diploma / Degree qualifications in media, marketing, communications, or relevant field is desirable.Experience working with local government is desirable.Key Selection Criteria:Demonstrated expertise and services to ensure the efficient and effective communication of Council’s strategic priorities.Capability to identify, manage, and deliver media and communications plans and projects that align with Council’s strategic objectives delivering a consistently high standard of written communication, stakeholder engagement, collateral, and reporting.Plan and develop highly effective media and communication opportunities and content that promotes Cloncurry Shire Council, the Mayor and Councillors.Identify and manage potential media and communication issues and reputational risks by developing suitable strategies without needing explicit direction and guidance.Excellent written skills in preparing communication collateral including media release, media alerts, briefing notes and speeches.This position is located in Cloncurry, QLD. To view the position description or to apply please visit http://careers.cloncurry.qld.gov.au/ To be considered for this position a Cover Letter & Resume must be submitted.For further information please contact HR Coordinator Terri Paine on 07 4742 4100.  Applications Close Friday 1 October 2021 at 5:00pm  Recruitment agencies - thanks for thinking of us, but we've got this one covered!
